Philadelphia Inquirer // This Book Will Save Your Life by A.M. Homes
I reviewed the new A.M. Homes novel in my hometown Inky:
In This Book Will Save Your Life, as in much of her previous work, A.M. Homes relies upon the staid conventions of realistic fiction while stretching them beyond all reasonable expectation. In locating the absurd and grotesque in our everyday lives, as few authors can so brilliantly, Homes has established herself as one of the most important and profound artists of her generation. The world of this novel is simply our own world, only more so.Read the rest of the review here.

Claire Dederer reviewed the Homes book in today's Chicago Tribune. Though she praised the novel profusely, she also noted that Homes never adequately discussed how the protagonist became the unappealing man he was at the beginning of the book, saying "maybe...Homes simply failed to come up with a decent backstory for the guy."
As I questioned on my blog, how can an author devote 372 pages to telling the story of an socially isolated protagonist but never get around to coming up with a backstory?
Your thoughts?
